Where do I find one?
Speak to people you know to find out if they have used someone who
is good. We always say shop around – get at least three quotes
in writing before you instruct a solicitor. The Law society’s
website solicitors-online.com – can be used by people in England
and Wales to search for a solicitor in their areas. For Scots it
is lawscot.org.uk and Northern Ireland lawsoc-ni.org. Ask if they
are specialists in residential conveyancing.
How much is it going to cost?
Some solicitors do it on a fixed fees basis, others by billable
hours. The average seems to be about £1000 - £2000 these days.
It’s worth trying to negotiate, particularly on a combined
quote (buying and selling).
